I have never heard of a textbook where THEY GET THE ANSWERS WRONG IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK. I've noticed this multiple times, each time spending around half an hour struggling to figure out how to get the same answer as them, before I realized, yet again, they were wrong. Who were the monkeys who made this crap? It's not just me being crazy, I looked online and people were having this problem with the 4th edition too. This is the fifth edition, and they still never got around to fixing something this important. They can move crap around so they can charge $200 more than before, but they can't fix blatant errors. And I've seen the sixth edition from a friend, and aside from page numbers being different so you can't follow along in a class that uses a different edition, there is seemingly no difference between them. This is the most blatant proof I've ever seen of the whole textbook industry being a scam and pure corruption.
I purchased this book new from Amazon because my daughter was told she needed a "new" book by her instructor so they could use the access code for the online Pearson labs. Upon receiving the book and attempting to activate the code on the Pearson site (the code inside the cover appeared new, and had to be scratched off), she was told the code was invalid. Thankfully she was able to reach a customer service representative who was able to generate her a new code, otherwise she would have had to pay a few hundred dollars more again for another code.Considering the outrageous cost of these textbooks, this is unacceptable.
I had my choice of taking a pre-calc track college algebra course using this book, or another using a book by a guy named Sullivan. I'm the kind of geek who will investigate course textbooks before I waste my time signing up for a class, especially with challenging material, like pre-calc algebra. Or it's challenging to a former liberal arts major like me.Sullivan was dry, boring, confusing and seemed deliberately abstruse in presenting the material. If you take a course using his book, you were guaranteed to spend a lot of time falling asleep from reading his dry, boring material--when you weren't on Khan Academy, in math labs and with math tutors trying to understand anything at all about what he was covering. Did I mention that his book is dry and boring? It's so dry and boring that it almost made me hate math--and I'm a math major!Blitzer is more direct and explains things in simpler terms, with numerous step-by-step examples to help you pick up how things work. He has a Great Questions feature that frequently covers the "bottom line" about complex material that gets to the heart of things and provides effective short cuts to understanding concepts in a memorable way. He explains things so well that you can teach yourself with his book, and this is NOT easy material for self-study. Unless you're a math genius, you could never do that with Sullivan.If you have a choice, like I do, and you're worried about understanding precalculus, take the class that uses this book. You won't regret it.
If you have ever used other math books or you're not a math person, you will be happy with Blitzer math textbooks. Out of all the math books I've used, Blitzer's tend to be the best. They are clear, concise, and show plenty of examples, which is something students tend to want above all else in a math book. Many textbooks tend to show only one or two examples per section or task. Blitzer's books show many. This book will do you justice if you're required to have it for a college algebra and/or trigonometry class.Please note that this package COMES WITH MYMATHLAB, as stated above. Do NOT buy it separately if you buy this product; the code comes with this. Amazon is offering another version that is just the textbook. DO NOT BUY THAT if you need MML. Currently, if your professor requires MML, this product is the best option. Do not buy the textbook and MML separately, unless you can get a used book for cheap (ie under 120ish), because it will not be worth it.
This book has everything you are going to need to learn Pre-Calculus. It has a good refreshing section at the beginning and each topic is standard with its theorems, definitions, then detailed problems step by step, reasons behind them, variety, and practice problems with solutions on the back. The solutions do not have supporting explanations but the example problems are not too challenging. This book works as an introductory to Pre-Calc and is not a source of challenging problems. For those, you will need to use the Math lab access code that comes with it, go to the internet, or get another book.This book comes with an online access code to use the internet for online lessons and Math Lab. If you are buying a used book, make sure you call to confirm that it has the access code, but be aware that used books usually do not have it because the previous owner already registered it on his or her own name. Better buy new. If this is required by your university or school, you will be in a pickle if your books comes without one. That Math Lab is a life saver because it provides detailed step by step instructions how to solve the math problems and newer versions come with online lessons too.Another point to check is that if you buy either older or new editions of Blitzer, make sure you have the required power and security access to use the online lab and lessons because the online book will not load properly if your computer is a dinosaur. Other times, the access code is no longer available because the edition is too old or too new and your computer does not support it.There is a web site they have that checks your computer to make sure you have the right stuff to open the books and lab.This tip will save you a lot of grief.
