I realise now that the main theme of the four books is not really about a fantasy quest, or good vs evil, or adventure. The books' big message is about love, friendship, camaraderie, devotion, loyalty.Some readers will mention they don't care for Sam continually gas-bagging, that his brattiness, and cockiness is annoying ,and that he hogs all the pages. - but to my mind Sam is The Story (capitalised). He is the hinge, the centre-piece.Every character in the story has a strategic and important place revolving around Sam. I love Ryan's fierce and undying love for Sam, Gary is his usual beautiful glitter-drenched snarky self, Tiggy is lovable, Kevin is delightful, Randall isnt as grumpy - I just want to hug them all, and for longer than a minute.I forgive Klune for pinching a few phrases from the wonderful "Until You". I guess he did it For Reasons.The tension was almost too much for me. So many times I wanted to skip to the finish to see how it all ended. The story about Sam and his loved ones trying to return their country to a peaceful place was a fun, yet often heart-stopping read. I had to go away from the book every now and then, to recharge my batteries; It was such a non-stop roller coaster ride of wit and originality that my mind needed to stop and think it all over.
4.5 starsIt always makes me a little sad to know, from the start of a book I am reading, it will be the last time I get to be in the head of one of my favorite characters. With this one I soaked up every page and didn't want it to end but, it did. Then I remembered it's a book and I can always start from the beginning again lolThis book takes place after Sam returns from his time in the Dark Woods where he spent 11 months developing his magic with the Great White and the rest of the dragons. 11 months since he has been away from his home of Verania, which has now been taken over by Myrin and the other dark wizards. 11 months he has been away from friends and family. 11 months since he has been away from his cornerstone.Sam knows when he returns things are going to be different and his family and friends are all going to be angry with him. He hopes that in the end they can forgive him and understand his reason for leaving. After all he has a destiny to fulfill.This book brings the conclusion of the battle with Myrin and the darks and Sam finally fulfilling his destiny. "My path may have been set in stone, but stone crumbles, and sometimes we have to forge our own way through.â€I love, love, love this book and this series as a whole. This book was a great end to Sam's perspective. I feel like part of his insane, fun, sassy posse. I traveled around with Sam and his crew and felt like part of the family. With Sam I went on adventures, was captured numerous amounts of times(really Sam you would think by book 4 you would know better lol), faced darks, listened to dreaded monologues, discovered first love, loss and heartbreak. Even though there was lots of sass there were also so many tender moments. Sam's love of his friends and family was one of beauty. We all knew Sam's story had to come to an end eventually, it has, and I love it all!*sidenote: I really look forward to reading Justin's perspective. It will be nice to get in his head and see if he actually has a personality going on. Plus we all know there will be a hefty dose of Sam in it. You know with him being Justin's best friend 5eva! )
